The locks on guns rely on very fine tolerances to work safely.  An un-lubricated binding mechanism, or a build up of debris can soon make even the very best of guns unsafe to use. The only thing preventing most guns from firing is the engagement of the sear with the tumbler, and this contact area is usually less than 2 mm deep. A build up of debris here can have dire conequences.  Also the gunsmith is more likely to prioritise your emergency repair if he knows that he wont have to find time to clean out all the rust and debris before he can start the repair.
