Dry mounting practice.

The purpose of dry mounting is to allow the user to develop a smooth, efficient mount that feels effortless and natural when shooting. This should allow the shooter to concentrate entirely on the target and have the gun arrive correctly aligned and neutral with the minimum of effort and in the shortest time.

The mount should be practised very slowly. This will allow the brain to learn the correct sequence, and to perform the movements accurately, thus improving co-ordination. An accurate and smooth mount will give the shooter the greatest chance of improving their shooting. A quick but erratic mount will always hinder their performance. Once the mount is accurate speed will develop without any special effort. With practise the mount should become so smooth and accurate that the gun can be fired as soon as the stock is supported by the shoulder. Being very quick  is of no benefit if the mount is so jerky that a long delay is required to steady the gun before the shot can be taken.

Dry mounting is not just for beginners or those trying to overcome a specific problem. Most top shots use it as a regular part of their training. Concentrate on making the mount smooth and accurate. Little and often is better than not handling the gun for weeks and then trying to make up for it in one mammoth session. The suggested five minutes threes times a week is a useful place to start. It is the quality of the dry mounting that matters the most. The purpose is not to just throw the gun about, but to practice the perfect mount until it becomes second nature.

Smoothness will lead to accuracy.            Accuracy will lead to speed.
