Prince of Wales grip.

Here I show the conversion of the grip on a Beretta shotgun from full pistol grip to a Prince of Wales style.  This was requested by the owner to both improve the comfort of the grip and the look of the gun.

After.

We also improved the oil finish a little as the wood was very dry.

On this gun the sharp corner formed at the bottom of the original grip seemed to interrupt the visual flow of the stock. Also, this corner made the grip feel cumbersome in the owners hand

Time to remove some wood.

Taking a big rasp to someone’s treasured gun takes a certain amount of nerve.   Skill and good visulisation is required to achieve the desired result.

Polishing to achieve a smooth surface.

Picture
The rasp leaves a very rough surface.  This is polished with emery paper until it is smooth again.

I usually final polish with 1200 grit (very fine).  800 grit would probably suffice, but the little extra polishing doesn't add much time to the job, so I feel that it is worth it.

Cutting new checkering to replace that removed for the reshaping, including a border that suits the new grip shape.
